A bull ring is a type of nose ring used to control cattle, particularly bulls. The ring is designed to be inserted through the nasal septum, which is a sensitive part of the animal's nose, and provides a way for a handler to control a powerful animal with minimal risk of injury. The ring in the image is a hinged, self-piercing style, which is secured by a thumbscrew that breaks off after being tightened. 
Bull rings are typically made from stainless steel, aluminum, or copper. They are usually installed by a veterinarian on bulls between 9 and 12 months of age. The rings are a safety measure, and can be used with a lead rope or bull staff for additional control.
